Marcello (played by Marcello Mastroianni) is a columnist for a magazine. He once tried to become a writer, but things didn’t go as planned, leaving him to spend his days chasing celebrity gossip. Marcello frequently attends socialite parties, and secretly collaborates with photographers to capture and publish the private lives of stars. He has a girlfriend named Emma, and on the way home from dropping her off, he picks up a brothel madam who shares many anecdotes from the world of pleasure, further fueling his disdain for the glamorous life. During a Christian ceremony, a model from America poses provocatively for the media, and later, Marcello's critical friend Steiner sharply points out her hypocrisy, leading him to gradually recognize the decay of high society and reassess his own life. He realizes he is not fond of a luxurious lifestyle and is dissatisfied with the self-righteous Emma, leading him to rebel in his own way…
