The story takes place in 1980s China, where a young painter Zheng Zhuang (played by Zhao Youliang) returns from out of town and moves into a residential building located in Qiansanmen. To Zheng Zhuang's surprise, the elevator girl here is Qin Shuang (played by Xiao Xiong), with whom he had a brief encounter in the past. Also living in this building is the family of Xiao Lingxia (played by Han Ying), who, compared to the naive Qin Shuang, is more calculating and knows how to fight for her own interests. In order to win over Director Yuan, Xiao Lingxia wants to introduce a partner for Yuan's daughter, Yuan Xiaoshen, but the latter refuses, as she has secretly admired Zheng Zhuang all along. Zheng Zhuang decides to participate in a national art exhibition, but struggles with inspiration. Qin Shuang becomes his muse, and through their collaborative efforts, Zheng Zhuang ultimately creates a satisfactory piece of work, sparking a romantic chemistry between them.
