Walter Mitty (played by Ben Stiller) is a film processing manager who has worked for Life magazine for 16 years. He is introverted and cannot bring himself to flirt with his crush, Cheryl (played by Kristen Wiig). As a bystander in life, he often "zones out" and dreams of being a hero. One day, after the company is acquired, the magazine needs to create its final cover, with the success hinging on finding a roll of film from the adventurous photographer Sean (played by Sean Penn). Walter finally speaks to Cheryl and, encouraged by her and her mother (played by Shirley MacLaine), embarks on a real adventure across ice fields, oceans, and the Himalayas... Walter's daydreams pale in comparison to the grandeur of reality.
