In early 1938, the internationalist fighter Norman Bethune (played by Tan Ningbang) traveled across the ocean to China to support the Chinese people's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. Chairman Mao met with him in Yan'an, and the Health Department of the Military Region arranged for him to be a medical advisor. Bethune found that the medical conditions in the border area were much worse than he had imagined.
