In early 1938, the internationalist fighter Norman Bethune (played by Tan Ningbang) traveled across the ocean to China to support the Chinese people's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. Chairman Mao met with him in Yan'an, and the Health Department of the Military Region arranged for him to be a medical advisor. Bethune found that the medical conditions in the border area were much worse than he had imagined. He requested the commander (played by Wu Xue) to establish a demonstration hospital in the rear, bringing in doctors from various divisions for training. He also disregarded his own safety and personally went to the front lines to perform surgery on seriously wounded soldiers. Due to a lack of necessary medical instruments, many critically injured patients could not receive timely treatment, causing Bethune to feel anxious. He decided to return to Canada once. However, an unexpected battle obstructed his return home, and he told Dr. Fang (played by Cun Li) and Secretary Tong (played by Ying Ruocheng) that he would not leave, as he was needed here even more. After the Battle of Huangtu Ridge, while performing surgery on a soldier, he accidentally cut his finger, and the tragedy inevitably occurred... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Zhou Aorfu.
