Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Black Panther) will star in Universal's new film Queen & Slim, set to be released in North America on November 27, 2019, with filming beginning in January. The film is a complex drama that tells the story of a black couple, "Queen" and "Slim," on their first date, who are pulled over by a police officer. The subsequent events diverge from Get Out: the couple kills the officer in self-defense and decides not to turn themselves in, opting instead to go on the run together. The story aims to explore social and political themes in America through this love story. The female lead, Queen, is currently being cast with plans to use new faces. Lena Waithe, known for The Chi and Ready Player One, is the writer, with her collaborator from The Chi, Melina Matsoukas, directing. This will be Matsoukas's directorial debut in film. The screenplay is adapted from a draft by controversial author James Frey, who wrote A Million Little Pieces, with new movie company Makeready funding the project.
