Ludvik is a public servant during the Czech Iron Curtain era. One night, he and his wife attend a government banquet, where he learns that his superior has been arrested by the secret police. He fears being implicated and, upon returning home, finds that the power is inexplicably out, with signs that someone has entered their home. Even the phone seems to be malfunctioning. He suspects he is under surveillance by the secret police and notices a car parked on the street, which appears to be a lookout for them. The couple, filled with anxiety about their future, starts to blame and argue with each other, eventually leading to mutual neglect. They believe they will be the next victims, and many related events make them increasingly fearful. They become anxious about the possibility of arrest, even contemplating suicide but ultimately unable to go through with it. The next day, they find themselves in despair, quietly awaiting the worst outcome. At that moment, the phone finally rings, but what comes from the other end is...
