The young and talented advertising designer Lu Jiayao (played by Tony Leung) accidentally injures someone while trying to stop a troublemaker and is sentenced to three years in prison. Inside the prison, his straightforward personality causes him to offend a gang leader, leading to relentless bullying. An old inmate, Zhong Tianzheng (played by Chow Yun-fat), unable to stand by, helps him, and the two become close friends in hardship. Zhong Tianzheng originally had a complete family, but due to his gambling addiction, he accidentally killed his wife. While reminiscing about the past in prison, he deeply regrets it and resolves to start anew after serving his sentence. However, by standing up for Lu Jiayao, he offends the ruthless warden (played by Chang Yao-yang), and thus becomes embroiled in the prison's violent underworld. In a desperate situation, he abandons the philosophy of "endure if you can" and decides to take violence with violence.
