Isaac, a reporter for a public radio station in New York (played by Tommy Nelson), lost his parents in a car accident when he was young, and has since been confined to a wheelchair. His quiet life is disrupted by a message from a mysterious person known as "Ancient Chinese Girl," revealing that a healthy man is attempting to bribe a doctor to deliberately amputate his own leg. Isaac decides to investigate the case further in pursuit of an exclusive story. During the investigation, he encounters a beautiful and mysterious girl named Fiona (played by Vera Farmiga). Fiona becomes his guide, leading him into an extremely secretive community. In this community, Isaac discovers an unusual subculture in which people seek a form of spiritual transcendence through physical disabilities. As the investigation deepens, a series of bizarre stories and events unfold.
