In 1970s Scotland, a somewhat neurotic woman named Beth (Emily Watson) defies religious constraints to marry oil worker Jan (Stellan Skarsgård). Their loving life does not last long, as Jan suffers severe injuries in an oil operation and becomes paralyzed. Beth feels devastated, even believing her own desires have led to this tragedy. To awaken her husband's vitality, Beth seduces different men and engages in relationships with them, hoping that the power of desire can conquer Jan's illness. Miraculously, Jan's condition begins to improve, yet the villagers look down on Beth with disdain, and she is eventually sent to a mental institution. The belief in sacrificing for love burns intensely in Beth, once again pushing her to the brink.
