The film tells the story of a young actress, Caiyun, from a county theater troupe who goes to Shanghai in search of her "star dream." After arriving in Shanghai, she turns to her childhood friend, A-Wei, who works as a photography assistant. Caiyun suddenly realizes that the vast city of Shanghai is a constantly changing world, and A-Wei can only live in a house that is about to be demolished. The dream becomes distant, but influenced by the idealistic Director Pan, A-Wei is filming a documentary about veteran filmmakers Zhao Dan and Huang Zongying. Zhao Dan and Huang Zongying's love for film and the romance that develops between them during the filmmaking process mirror the life and love between Caiyun and A-Wei.
