The story takes place in the Czech Republic. Nona (played by Deana Horváthová) is an ordinary woman who by chance meets a nurse named Ester (played by Dagmar Veskrnová). Ester tells Nona that her former lover was a party member who, disheartened after the revolution failed, chose to commit suicide. Nona is pregnant, but when she shares this good news with her boyfriend, he chooses to avoid her and retreat. It is then that Ester extends a helping hand to Nona, taking her in when she has nowhere to go. The first thing the two women need to do to survive is to find ways to make money. They come up with many dubious schemes and eventually end up making a large sum by selling the artwork of Ester's deceased lover. Thus, two women at the end of their ropes embark on an irreversible path.
