In the 13th century, Japanese monk Dogen (played by Nakamura Kantarō) travels a long distance to the Song Dynasty, visiting famous mountains and rivers in search of the true meaning of Buddhism. However, the major temples are obsessed with incense offerings and align themselves with politics, making it difficult to find the true path across the land. After many twists and turns, Dogen coincidentally meets Master Nyojin of the Tendo Mountain and eventually achieves enlightenment, returning to his homeland. At that time, Japan was in the chaotic Kamakura period, with rampant violence and immorality among the people, and even monks lacked the heart to practice, indulging in greed and pleasure. Dogen establishes the Soto school, attracting sincere seekers of the way but also inciting jealousy from other sects. With the protection of the local official Hatano and many disciples, Dogen leads his followers to Echizen, where he establishes Eiheiji, and the Soto school begins to gradually flourish... This film is adapted from Tetsuo Ôtani's original work "The Wind of Eiheiji, The Life of Dogen."
