The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by American author Dennis Lehane. In 1954, U.S. Marshal Teddy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his partner Chuck (Mark Ruffalo) arrive by boat at the Shutter Island Asylum for the criminally insane near Boston to investigate a bizarre disappearance case. The female inmate Rachel (Emily Mortimer), who had killed her own children, mysteriously escapes from a heavily guarded cell and hides deep within the isolated island. Teddy suspects that the chief psychiatrist Dr. John Cawley (Ben Kingsley) is intentionally concealing the truth, and reveals to Chuck that his real purpose for coming to the island is to find the warden who had set fire to and killed his wife Dolores (Michelle Williams) years ago, and to expose the crimes of the U.S. government using mentally ill prisoners for human scientific experiments. However, as the investigation deepens, the truth becomes increasingly elusive...
