Prince Ying Zheng of the Qin state was raised as a hostage in Zhao, where a kind-hearted woman from Yan nurtured him alongside her son, Gao Jianli. After King Xiang's death, Ying Zheng rushed back to Qin with the envoys to ascend the throne, while his two friends were separated forever. Ying Zheng (played by Jiang Wen), now King of Qin, ordered the great armies of the three Qins to attack cities and seize land, instilling fear among the lords of various states. After defeating Zhao, the unification of the realm was imminent. Remembering their past, the King wished to find Gao Jianli (played by Ge You) to compose the "Qin Song." Gao refused the royal command and ultimately became a prisoner, but through this misfortune, he met the beautiful Princess Lu Yang (played by Xu Qing).
