During the Anti-Japanese War in Baiyangdian, Hebei, the mischievous and reckless boy Zhang Ga (An Jisi) witnesses his grandmother being killed by Japanese invaders while trying to protect the Eighth Route Army's escape. He ventures alone to the county seat to find the guerrilla squad leader Luo Jinbao (Zhang Ying) to help him avenge his grandmother. However, when he finally meets Luo Jinbao, he mistakes him for a traitor, leading to a comedic misunderstanding. After the misunderstanding is cleared, Zhang Ga dreams of becoming a little Eighth Route Army soldier and wants to have a gun. His eagerness leads him to cheat during a bet with Fat Dun (Wu Keqin) and to hide a real gun confiscated during a battle in a bird's nest in a tree, resulting in more comedic trouble. Zhang Ga does not take the jokes lightly. Unable to make sense of things, he enlists Fat Dun again and heads to the county seat, determined to avenge his grandmother himself. In the county seat, Zhang Ga encounters the Japanese soldier Kuitian (Ge Cunzhuang) and the fat translator (Wang Shu). Through a battle of wits and courage, neither of the Japanese gets any advantage from Zhang Ga. After a series of events, Zhang Ga matures from a reckless troublemaker into a real little scout of the Eighth Route Army.
