American couple Roy (Woody Harrelson) and Jessie (Emily Mortimer) take a train from Beijing to Moscow for vacation. On the train, they meet Spanish young man Carlos (Eduardo Noriega) and American girl Abby (Kate Mara). When the train stops in the Siberian town of Irkutsk, Roy misses the train due to his eagerness for sightseeing, and Carlos and Abby decide to wait for Roy with Jessie at the next stop, Ilanskaya. The flirtatious Carlos quickly starts pursuing Jessie, complicating what was originally a simple sightseeing trip. Meanwhile, another passenger in the same compartment as the couple is Russian drug enforcement officer Grinko (Ben Kingsley). As the situation becomes increasingly strange, the couple finds themselves deep in crisis...
This film won the Gaudí Award for Best Art Direction and Best Film Editing and received four nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects. It was also nominated for Best Actress (Emily Mortimer), Best International Film, and Best Supporting Actor (Woody Harrelson) by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films.
