The HBO television film "Behind the Candelabra" was selected for the main competition section of the 66th Cannes Film Festival. The film is based on a celebrity biography, featuring the protagonist Liberace (played by Michael Douglas), a well-known piano artist in Hollywood during the 1950s to 1970s. Not only was his performance fee the highest in the world, but he also earned the title "King of Bling" for his extravagant and flamboyant style. He never admitted to being gay and has fought multiple libel lawsuits for it, but in his later years, he found himself in court with his 22-year-old male assistant and bodyguard, Scott (played by Matt Damon). The latter claimed they had a five-year secret relationship and demanded exorbitant alimony, an event that shook the American entertainment industry. The two eventually chose to settle out of court, and the following year, Liberace died due to complications from AIDS. The film begins with the encounter between Scott and Liberace. Upon their first meeting, Scott is captivated by Liberace's mesmerizing piano performance, and a teasing remark from Liberace, "This must be destiny," quickly draws them together. When they don't have to face the public, they behave like an ordinary couple, living a fairy-tale life of luxury. However, while Scott enjoys a love and material security that women crave, he is destined never to receive official recognition of their relationship. This regret is not only a result of societal prejudice but also due to Liberace's selfishness and obstinacy. Ultimately, the two part ways, and the secret underground life of a superstar turns into a public spectacle, a grand soap opera; a genuinely heartfelt love ultimately succumbs to a closet tightly shut...
