Maria Vargas (Ava Gardner) is a beautiful, sensitive Spanish woman longing for love, who is dancing in a bar. She is discovered by American director Harry Dawes (Humphrey Bogart) and brought to Hollywood, becoming a movie star in the spotlight. However, she has conflicts with Kirk Edwards, the boss who invested in Harry's film, and becomes entangled with wealthy South American Bravano. Until she meets the man who truly loves her — Count Vincenzo, they finally get married, but tragedy is unavoidable. As Vincenzo's family motto says: what is meant to be will come.
