Mi Xiang (played by Tao Hong) from Aba, Sichuan, is abandoned by her husband and lives alone with her mentally challenged son (played by Yang Qing). A villager, Ma Jinhua (played by Wang Jinghua), suggests that she go to a small coal mine in the north to find a bachelor to marry, as miners receive considerable compensation after accidents.
