Ma Dache from the Changqing Commune drives a three-horse cart loaded with fertilizers down the center of a bustling road in the outskirts of the capital. To ensure the vegetable supply and environmental sanitation for the capital, relevant Beijing authorities decided to prohibit horse-drawn carriages from entering the city and appointed Ai Jinghua to equip the Changqing Commune with a fleet of cars to replace the carriages for vegetable delivery. However, the horse carriage drivers, led by Ma Dache, see Ai Jinghua as a thorn in their side. Ma Dache's son, Ma Sanbei, stands by his fiancée Ai Jinghua and engages in a struggle against his father. At the wedding banquet, Ma Dache finally realizes that Ai Jinghua is his daughter-in-law, leading to mutual understanding between the father-in-law and daughter-in-law. With carriages no longer allowed in the city, Ma Dache continues to drive the horse cart on the suburban roads, taking on transportation duties that cars cannot fulfill.
