35-year-old Nora (played by Parker Posey) is a successful career woman in Manhattan — she is the customer service manager at a luxury hotel. Although she is sharp and can quickly see through guests' needs, she has always struggled to find her own romantic destination and is utterly confused when it comes to relationships. Nora had a fling with a hotel guest — the star Nick — but when she was filled with hope, she discovered that he was just experiencing life with her for the sake of a performance. After a series of "first date" failures, disheartened Nora meets Julian (played by Melvil Poupaud), a Frenchman who speaks broken English. Their relationship quickly heats up, but Julian is soon returning to France and invites Nora to "elope" with him. However, feeling disillusioned after repeated emotional setbacks, Nora suddenly loses her confidence and rejects Julian. When Julian returns to his country, Nora realizes she can never forget this man. Thus, she travels to Paris with her friend by her side.
