In 1992, the North American Free Trade Agreement was signed and came into effect. Many large companies flocked to the Mexican border towns adjacent to the United States to establish factories, hiring local cheap labor to mass-produce goods and dumping them into the U.S. These factories are known as “Maquiladoras.” Local women, for a meager salary, worked tirelessly day and night, often not returning home until late at night or in the early morning. During this dangerous and sparsely populated time, many women suffered from rape and murder. In the chaotic and decaying Juárez, a series of murders targeting Maquiladora women garnered widespread attention. To secure a position as a foreign correspondent, American journalist Lauren (played by Jennifer Lopez) began investigating the serial killings in Juárez. In the process, she encountered a girl named Eve (played by Maya Zapata) who had narrowly escaped death, intertwining the fates of the two women... This film is based on true events.
