There is a gray area at the border between the United States and Mexico, a paradise for drug dealers and killers who trade and shoot without regard for the law. Kate (played by Emily Blunt) is an FBI agent harboring a righteous ideal of punishing evil, and she comes to this place to join a federal task force, becoming a subordinate to Matt (played by Josh Brolin). Alejandro (played by Benicio Del Toro) is a former agent who was once undercover among the drug lords. Matt finds him, hoping that the experienced Alejandro can serve as a strategic advisor for the task force. However, the hellish experiences Alejandro has endured lead him to act unconventionally, which frequently triggers Kate’s fragile and sensitive nerves. As the investigation deepens, the air of death envelops everyone in the task force, and time and again they brush against mortality, causing Kate's worldview to begin to waver.
