Many years ago, in a remote part of China, a blind child followed his master to learn the guqin. The master told him there was a prescription that could cure his eyes and allow him to see again, but this prescription could only be taken out of the instrument case after he had broken a thousand strings; otherwise, it would be ineffective. After the master died, the blind child broke one string after another, disregarding everything else in life. Over the years, the young boy became an old master, and the villagers respected him as “Shen Shen” (played by Liu Zhongyuan). Whenever there were disputes in the village, everyone loved to ask Shen Shen to resolve them. Shen Shen had a blind disciple named Shitou (played by Huang Lei), who had an affair with a villager named Lan Xiu (played by Xu Qing) that was discovered by the villagers, leading to a severe beating, after which Lan Xiu angrily left. Heaven does not disappoint those who persevere; Shen Shen finally broke a thousand strings, just as his master said he could obtain the prescription and see the light. However, things had an unexpected outcome.
