This film is adapted from Mo Yan's two novellas published in 1986, "Red Sorghum" and "Sorghum Liquor." Due to a mule, "my grandmother" Jiu'er (played by Gong Li) is forced by her parents to marry a 50-year-old leper who owns a distillery. On her wedding day, while being carried in a wedding sedan, she is intercepted by a robber. One of the bearers, Yu Zhan'ao (played by Jiang Wen), drives the robber away, and Jiu'er develops feelings for him. Three days later, Jiu'er returns home to visit her parents. Suddenly, the bearer rushes out from a sorghum field and abducts Jiu'er. They engage in an affair amidst the sorghum fields. Upon returning to the distillery, Jiu'er discovers that her leprous husband has died. "My grandmother" supports the Li family's liquor business, and soon Yu Zhan'ao officially becomes "my grandfather," creating a unique method for brewing fine liquor called "Eighteen Reds." During the War of Resistance against Japan, "my grandfather" and "my grandmother" co-author a tragic song.
