Bo Zai Gao (played by Chow Yun-fat), A Zhan (played by Leslie Cheung), and Hong Dou (played by Cherie Chung) are orphans who become international thieves under the tutelage of their foster father (played by Tseng Chang). As they grow up, they become art thieves who help him make money, while at the same time recognizing a police officer (played by Zhu Jiang) as their godfather. In the Paris Museum, the famous painting "The Maid of Herring" is stolen. Meanwhile, A Hai, A Zhan, and Hong Dou skillfully steal another famous painting and learn about "The Maid of Herring" being inside a haunted castle during a transaction with their French boss. Following Tseng Chang's arrangements, they successfully steal the painting but fall into a trap schemed by the group’s original culprit, Tseng Chang, in collusion with the French boss, sending assassins after them. A Hai's car collides with a killer's speedboat... The three become separated, and years later they reunite in Hong Kong. A Hai is "paralyzed" living in Zhu Jiang's house, while A Zhan and Hong Dou are already married. Tseng Chang pressures them to steal paintings again...
