Shaolin lay disciple Fang Shiyu (played by Ji Tiansheng) hides with his master, the Zen Master Zhineng, in the desert to evade the Qing soldiers and unexpectedly meets the reformed courtesan Dou Dou (played by Li Ruotong). The three become acquainted in the chaos of war, and Fang Shiyu falls in love with Dou Dou at first sight. The Qing soldiers surround the three, and Zhineng tragically dies, while Shiyu and Dou Dou are taken back to the Red Lotus Temple. Under the control of the master Shen Gong (played by Huang Jinjian), the temple forces many Shaolin disciples into slavery. The former lay disciple Hong Xiguan submits to Shen Gong and becomes a foreman, battling fiercely with Fang Shiyu. Shiyu is secretly plotted against by Shen Gong and is left in a near-death state. The Red Lotus Temple is filled with dangers, and Shaolin disciples often lose their lives during labor. Dou Dou, who is taken as Shen Gong's favored concubine, pleads for Fang Shiyu's life.
