This film is based on the true story of 61,000 Allied prisoners of war forced to build the Thailand-Burma railway during World War II. Young Scottish officer Captain Ernest Gordon is captured by the Japanese during a battle, and along with Major Campbell and others, he is forced to become a slave for the emperor to construct a segment of the railway from Thailand to Burma. In the POW camp, they endure brutal torture, but they also forge strong friendships amid days worse than death. Ernest establishes a "Jungle University" in the camp to keep the prisoners united. The Japanese brutality becomes unbearable, and Major Campbell finally decides to implement an escape plan; however, the failure of the plan leads a comrade, who had previously been in conflict with him, to sacrifice himself to save his life.
