In the 1930s, the owner of a German chocolate factory was Russian. Faced with the dual setbacks of marriage and career, he felt utterly despondent. He fantasized about escaping his life, observing himself as if his soul had left his body. When he saw a street homeless man, he felt that man looked exactly like him. To "exchange identities," he killed the other. The film is quite different from Fassbinder's other works, as it uses a script from a well-known screenwriter and is adapted from Nabokov's novel. The brilliant dialogue seems concentrated in the first third of the film. The film is bold and cliché, having received widespread negative reviews.
