Jude (played by Christopher Eccleston) grows up in the countryside, determined to change his fate through knowledge, with the goal of attending university. However, youthful desires lead him to have a relationship with a local girl, shattering his dreams of higher education. Soon after, the girl moves to Australia in search of a better life, leaving Jude and his dreams to continue to blossom here. In order to get into university, Jude specifically moves closer to the university town, desperately seeking opportunities. At the same time, his cousin Sue (played by Kate Winslet) secretly captures his heart. Due to their familial bond, neither dares to break the taboo. When Sue marries someone else, Jude finally breaks through the repressed feelings he has long held. They disregard societal norms, not caring about the consequences, as long as they are together. They fearlessly venture to the ends of the earth. However, misfortune eventually strikes. Their child pays a heavy price for everything, and Jude and Sue's relationship also enters a cold winter.
