"Gravity's Edge" (2013) reunites the father-son duo behind the scenes—last time directed by father Alfonso Cuarón, this time son Jonás takes the helm, with the father producing. It is also a story of survival, where the thrills are not only in outer space but even more dangerous on Earth. Gael García Bernal plays Moses, a Mexican undocumented immigrant dreaming of family reunification, who crosses the U.S. border illegally. Unexpectedly, he encounters murderous border patrols driven by xenophobia, abusing vigilante justice and hunting him down, turning his quest for freedom into a terrifying life-and-death escape. The border desert becomes a battlefield, and is the teddy bear given by his family a talisman or a death curse? The film is akin to a modern Exodus, ringing alarm bells for the rise of right-wing populism in today's America.
