The story takes place in West Germany in 1958. Johann (played by Alexander Fehling) is a public prosecutor responsible for handling lawsuits related to violations of traffic safety laws. One day, in court, he encounters a journalist named Thomas (played by André Szymanski) loudly accusing a high school teacher, claiming that the latter was a guard at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II, and has now evaded legal consequences. This incident prompts deep reflection in Johann, who begins to pay attention to the perceptions and attitudes of those around him regarding Germany's past atrocities, leading to shocking realizations. Consequently, Johann decides to search for survivors of the Auschwitz concentration camp and have them identify war criminals who are still at large. As the investigation deepens, Johann is astonished to discover the vast number of people involved, including himself.
