Eddie the barber (played by Billy Bob Thornton) lives a mundane life; his wife Doris (Frances McDormand), who works as a bookkeeper at a department store, is emotionally distant from him. Eddie suspects that his wife is having an affair with her boss Dave. One day, a customer Eddie serves brags about a booming dry-cleaning business and tries to persuade Eddie to invest. Not wanting to spend his life in loneliness in the small town, Eddie decides to invest and sends an anonymous threatening letter to Dave to extort money. Eddie receives the hush money he desired, but the situation soon spirals out of control, and Dave confronts Eddie. In the confrontation, Dave is killed. Dave's death leads to Doris's imprisonment, while Eddie remains suspected. Consequently, he distances himself from the events, spending his days listening to the piano played by young Betty (Scarlett Johansson). Soon, a car accident takes a sudden turn on the situation...This film won the Best Director award at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, the Best Cinematography award at the 2002 BAFTA Awards, and a total of 19 accolades, including Best Actor and Best Screenwriter from the London Film Critics Circle.
