Princess Anne (Audrey Hepburn) of a certain European country visits Rome, burdened by state affairs, but she is tired of the formalities. One evening, exhausted, she sneaks out to enjoy the night view and meets newspaper reporter Joe (Gregory Peck) by chance. The two spend a delightful night together and the princess even stays overnight at Joe's home. Unexpectedly, Joe discovers the princess's true identity and decides to create an exclusive news story. Together with his friend and photographer Irving (Eddie Albert), he takes the princess on a tour of Rome and secretly photographs many candid shots of her life. However, as Joe spends more time with the princess, he unwittingly falls in love with her. In order to protect the princess's image, Joe reluctantly gives up his chance at fame and fortune, handing the photos over to her. After her day of adventure in Rome, Princess Anne realizes her responsibilities towards her country and resolutely returns to the embassy, decisively abandoning love for the sake of duty.
