Shakespeare's tragic love story "Romeo and Juliet" has been adapted for the screen 12 times since its release in 1595, with the 1968 version directed by Franco Zeffirelli being regarded as a classic since its debut. There are two prominent and fiercely opposed families residing in the city of Verona, Italy, in the fifteenth century. They are constantly engaged in bloody feuds. Romeo (Leonard Whiting) from the Montague family and Juliet (Olivia Hussey) from the Capulet family fall in love at first sight and secretly marry. When Juliet's cousin provokes Romeo and is accidentally killed, Romeo is exiled from the city. To escape her family's pressure to marry, Juliet, with the help of a priest, fakes her own death. Upon learning this, Romeo returns and, finding Juliet sleeping in the tomb, drinks poison in despair. When Juliet awakens and sees her lover dead, she also takes her own life with a dagger.
