The film tells the story of a gunman, John Henry Clayton (played by Kiefer Sutherland), who is filled with resentment as he returns to his hometown to mend his relationship with his estranged father (played by Donald Sutherland). He struggles to break free from the shadow of the drowning of his younger brother, William, caused by an accident years ago, but becomes embroiled in the conflict between local capitalists and the farmers over land. After enduring much, he decides to take up arms again to eliminate the villains when the capitalists target his father, the pastor.
