Sergey (played by Valentin Popov), Nikolai (played by Nikolai Gubenko), and Slava (played by Stanislav Lyubshin) are childhood friends who grew up together. As they grew up, they all chose to serve their country in the military, and after their discharge, the three embarked on different paths in life. Sergey has always wanted to attend the Power Institute, but after his father tragically died in the war, his mother and sister Vera (played by Svetlana Svetlichnaya) depend on him for support, so he has to give up his dream of education. Slava entered into marriage early, but what marriage brought him was only pain and arguments. Nikolai's character is somewhat more immature than the other two; he seems to have no worries, always laughing and joking.
