In the 1970s, Harlem, Frank Lucas (played by Denzel Washington) is the driver for gang leader Johnson. After Johnson's sudden death, Frank seizes this hard-won opportunity to restructure the distribution of power in the underground world, successfully rising to power, taking over the boss's business, and controlling the drug trade. During this time, he travels to Southeast Asia's Golden Triangle to smuggle high-purity heroin, gathers his family and brothers, and assembles a group of subordinates who are loyal to him, giving rise to a dark force. On the other side, police officer Richie Roberts (played by Russell Crowe) has a broken family and feels out of place in mainstream society, roaming the streets in a scruffy appearance. He gradually becomes aware of the brewing storm in the drug circle and begins a covert investigation. As the investigation deepens, the distance between Roberts and Lucas narrows, and the two similar men who appreciate each other inevitably confront one another...
