Mildred (Frances McDormand) suffers the brutal murder of her daughter while out, leading to the end of her marriage with Charlie (John Hawkes). Now, she lives a reliant life with her son Robbie (Lucas Hedges). Months pass, and the case remains unsolved, with the police seemingly having shifted their focus away from it. Desperate and tormented, Mildred rents three giant billboards along a highway, denouncing the police's incompetence and directly targeting Police Chief Willoughby (Woody Harrelson). In reality, Willoughby is hiding the fact that he is terminally ill. The three billboards dramatically change the lives of Mildred and Willoughby.
