David Lurie (played by John Malkovich) teaches at a university in Cape Town, but in his fifties, he is punished by the school for seducing and having an affair with a female student. During a hearing organized by the school, David admits to the charges but shows no sign of remorse. Forced to resign, David goes to the farm of his daughter Lucy (played by Jessica Haines) in a rural town, only to unexpectedly encounter a home invasion where three criminals rape his daughter. David feels tremendous guilt over his powerlessness, but his daughter's indifferent attitude toward the incident infuriates him even more, coupled with her repeated concessions to their Black neighbor which he finds even more bewildering. David feels ashamed; he feels like he is living like a dog... The film is adapted from the Nobel Prize-winning novel of the same name and won the Best Film Award at the Middle East Film Festival in 2008, as well as the International Critics' Award at the Toronto Film Festival.
