Thomas (played by Benno Fuehrmann) was once a soldier, but he was dismissed due to a mistake he made. Returning home in disgrace, Thomas finds himself unemployed and spends his days in a state of despair. The death of his mother brings a turning point in Thomas's life as he inherits her estate and moves into the house where she lived. In an unexpected encounter, Thomas meets Ali (played by Hilmi Sözer), a Turkish immigrant who runs a small tavern in the area and has many connections. Thomas finds work under Ali and finally gets his life back on track, along the way meeting Ali's wife, Laura (played by Nina Hoss). Intelligent and capable, Thomas quickly earns Ali's trust, but at the same time, the illicit affair between Thomas and Laura gradually intensifies.
