During the Vietnam War, American soldiers heading to the battlefield would stop in Wan Chai, leading to a unique atmosphere filled with tattoo artists, street beggars, mixed-race children searching for their fathers, "Ah Fei" types, and bar girls who were actually prostitutes from the late 1950s onwards. The bar madam returned home to find girls to work in the bar, and a stubborn girl from a poor family, Lai Shuiwei (played by Ha Menxi), along with several sisters from her hometown, came to Wan Chai from the Tai O fishing village to start their lives selling their bodies. Initially, the fishing girls were ridiculed by other bar girls, but with the guidance of the experienced Xiao Lingyu (played by Yu Qian), they quickly matched others, and Lai Shuiwei, renamed Shui Meili, became the center of attention. The charming yet reckless “mixed-race” Jimmy (played by Anthony Wong) lost his mother at a young age, and after Xiao Lingyu raised him, she considered him her own possession. However, Jimmy had no feelings for her; he only thought of his father, whose whereabouts were unknown. Many bar girls were also fascinated by Jimmy, blaming Xiao Lingyu for being too possessive, preventing them from getting close to him. Shui Meili also had feelings for him. One time, Jimmy was confronted by Ah Fei, and Shui Meili cleverly saved him, revealing the name of his father that she had overheard. The two began a secret romance behind Xiao Lingyu's back. Later, Shui Meili tore her relationship with Xiao Lingyu apart for him and left the bar. However, upon finding his father, Jimmy had forgotten his original vows and left for America without a second thought. The street rules that led to Shui Meili's downfall made her a street prostitute, but Xiao Lingyu didn’t offer her any chances either. With no other options, she went to Ma Youdi and struggled for a few years, but her situation worsened. Fortunately, she found help from the gang leader Wang Ying (played by Yip Deh-hin), allowing Shui Meili to make a comeback and expand her business to Tsim Sha Tsui in just a few years. With the end of the Vietnam War, Wan Chai became desolate, and Xiao Lingyu faded like a candle in the wind. Shui Meili remembered her old kindness and visited her just as Jimmy returned to Hong Kong. Upon learning that he was back to find his wife, others assumed Shui Meili would rekindle her romance with him. Although she had long given up hope, she felt a stir of emotions within. However, he had already become a worldly person, completely forgetting their past relationship. Later, Shui Meili aimed to focus entirely on her business, but the changing times were beyond her and her lover Wang Ying's control.
