Wang Shuangli (played by Niu Zhenhua) is the acting director of a cultural center in a certain place. This acting director has held the position for several years and cannot get promoted, nor does anything else change. However, one day, a new cultural center director, Old Ma (played by Lei Kesheng), arrives, which makes Wang Shuangli's distance from the official director even greater. The new director, Old Ma, was originally a deputy town chief, and Wang Shuangli considers him a simpleton. Feeling disdainful, he tries to give Old Ma difficult problems to solve, leveraging his familiarity with the interpersonal relationships within the cultural center. After several rounds of competition, Old Ma is finally ousted, and Wang Shuangli becomes the acting director again, receiving leadership's support once more. Unexpectedly, as the mantis stalks the cicada, the secretary Xiao Yan (played by Li Qiang) becomes the new director.
