Erin (played by Hilary Swank) starts her first teaching job in a nightmarish classroom at Wilson School. The students are a nightmare for teachers: they waste time, slack off, and treat the school as a playground until they turn 18; even more chaotic, they come from different races and various lower classes in society, forming cliques and fighting amongst themselves. Erin tries every way to keep hatred out of the children's hearts and to dissolve their enmity, but as a white teacher, she encounters a solid wall of resistance from the students. Erin's educational ideals repeatedly hit obstacles in reality. Are the children's souls doomed to fall into despair, or can their futures regain hope under Erin's dedicated guidance? With a heavy burden on her shoulders, Erin has only one book, "The Diary of a Young Girl," that might inspire the children, as well as a sincere and passionate heart to lead the lost kids to find their light.
