In the late 19th century, people's understanding of scientific civilization was not very clear, thus, Angier (played by Hugh Jackman) and Borden (played by Christian Bale) became the magical figures of London. Angier, coming from aristocracy, had a glamorous array of magical techniques and was a frequent performer in the wealthy circles. Although Borden came from humble beginnings, his competitive spirit and creative magic skills earned him fame. The two were childhood friends, but now in the magic world, they each have their territories and both aspire to become the top magicians in the music hall, leading to an intense rivalry laden with both overt and covert conflicts. Borden mastered the spectacular art of duplication, drawing applause and acclaim. Sensing trouble, Angier enlisted the help of a scientist—his invention of alternating current holds endless magic, guaranteed to leave audiences spellbound. The two exchanged blows, ramping up the confrontation, with friendship and morality cast aside, as a bloody conflict quietly brewed.
