To fulfill their shared goal of assassinating the German ambassador, they must pretend to be a married couple. Initially, the vastly different personalities of Max and Marianne lead to frequent misunderstandings and conflicts, but over time, as they endure life-and-death moments and save each other, their pretended romance slowly turns genuine, and they fall in love. Ultimately, the mission is successfully completed, and the lovers marry and have a child. Just when Max thinks their life will continue smoothly, he begins to suspect that his wife's true identity is that of a Nazi spy.
