At Christmas 1907, the Ekdahl family enjoys a warm Christmas dinner shared by two generations. However, the good times do not last; the young protagonist Alexander (Bertil Guve) and Fanny's (Pernilla Allwin) father Oscar (Allan Edwall) suddenly suffers a stroke while rehearsing "Hamlet" and entrusts the beloved theater he has managed to his wife Emily (Ewa Froling) as he lies dying. A year later, Emily remarries the cold and brutal young bishop Edward. Edward's mother and sister are oppressive and cruel, and the conflict between Alexander and his stepfather intensifies, but he can only endure in silence.
