The story takes place in the desolate West, where the living conditions are extremely harsh and resources are severely lacking. A man named John (played by Warren Beatty) arrives in this area and, with his wisdom and courage, defies the odds to open a brothel, earning himself a place in the small town. As time passes, John's business flourishes, attracting even the famous leading lady, Mrs. Miller (played by Julie Christie), who joins his establishment.
