The story takes place in the desolate West, where the living conditions are extremely harsh and resources are severely lacking. A man named John (played by Warren Beatty) arrives in this area and, with his wisdom and courage, defies the odds to open a brothel, earning himself a place in the small town. As time passes, John's business flourishes, attracting even the famous leading lady, Mrs. Miller (played by Julie Christie), who joins his establishment. During their time together, the charming and promising John captivates Miller's attention, while he is also enchanted by her irresistible allure, and the two gradually become involved with each other. Just at this crucial moment, another outsider arrives in the small town, becoming John's greatest rival in his business. Will John compromise or fight back? He has his own plans.
