Zika Robas is a sewer worker on the streets of Paris, hoping to one day become a street cleaner. Although he is very confident, he lacks religious faith and feels that God always disappoints him. Not far from where he works lives a girl named Dianne, who is not pretty and is often beaten and scolded without reason by her cruel sister Nana. Whenever Nana feels cheated by life, she picks up a whip to hit Dianne. One time, Dianne falls into a ditch and is choked by Nana. Zika rushes out of the sewer to help Dianne chase Nana away. Later, the unfortunate Dianne decides to take back her life with Zika's knife, but Zika stops her. When the police condemn Dianne, Zika once again rushes out to tell the police that this girl is about to become his wife. The police are skeptical of what he says because Zika shows great sympathy for the girl and invites her to spend the night in his apartment. His apartment is on the seventh floor of a tall building, which Dianne calls "Seventh Heaven." Meanwhile, Zika gets the job he desires and wants to do bigger and better things, while Dianne, inspired by Zika's confidence, gains faith in life and no longer fears it. When she encounters her demon sister again, who wants to take her away, she grabs Nana's whip and drives her off. Subsequently, war breaks out, and Zika and Dianne are separated for a long time, only able to maintain contact through their thoughts. One night, Zika is injured by a bomb and immediately sends a message to Dianne, who has become a military supplies manufacturer by then. Production Notes This is a poignant love story based on Austin Strong's play, which, after its release in 1927, caused a great sensation and made one of the stars, Janan Gaynor, an instant red star, winning the Oscar for Best Actress and becoming the first person to receive this award. The success of this film even led 20th Century Fox to add dialogue to it in 1937, modifying it into a sound film version. In the film, the emotional lives of the characters are expressed through the superb use of light and shadow. The expressionistic yet thoroughly Americanized use of space breaks traditional perspectives shaped by various experiences, providing a brand-new way of viewing, giving a poetic imagination. Even the later dubbed versions of the film highlight the director Borzag's gifted talent. Borzag's film is both a wonderful narrative drama and can also be seen as an excellent alternative war film.
