In ancient Japan during the Edo period, the Tokugawa shogunate enforced isolation, maintaining a peaceful separation from the world and absolute control by the shogunate. The fifth shogun, Tsunayoshi (played by Takagawa Yoko), visits the Banshu Akō Domain led by Asano Takumi-no-Kami (played by Tanaka Min) accompanied by Kira Yoshinaka (played by Asano Tadanobu). Kira is sinister, narrow-minded, and ambitious; he uses the enchantress Mizuki (played by Kikuchi Rinko) to trick the Asano lord into attacking him. Enraged, the shogun orders Asano to commit seppuku and strictly forbids the Akō Domain's councillor, Oishi Kuranosuke (played by Sanada Hiroyuki), from taking revenge. Proud samurai are instantly reduced to ronin, while the half-breed Kai (played by Keanu Reeves) is treated unjustly. After enduring humiliation for some time, Oishi gathers 46 loyal samurai from the Akō Domain and secretly plots revenge against Kira. He eventually finds Kai, who has loved the Asano lord's daughter, Miki (played by Shibasaki Kou), since childhood and chooses to join the revenge group to protect his beloved from Kira's defilement.
